SpeedCast International Limited (ASX: SDA) is the largest global satellite communications and network service provider, offering high-quality managed network services in over 100 countries and offices in over 40 countries. SpeedCast has unique infrastructure to serve the requirements of customers globally and has distinguished itself with strong operational expertise and a highly efficient support organization.

With over 25 years of experience in designing and installing command and control rooms, Critical Room Solutions (CRS) were awarded the contract for the upgrade of SpeedCast’s Network Operations Centre (NOC) at the Australian headquarters in South Australia.

SpeedCast NOC Manager, Angus Downer, said “We gave the CRS team a challenge which I had thought near impossible; provide a new Network Operations Center catering for over double the amount of staff, in the same amount of space, next to our loud Equipment room, all while delivering a work environment which promoted staff comfort, increased our proactive support and shined as a facility our stakeholders would be blown away with.

CRS delivered on this.

The 3D CAD interactive walk through (CADwalk) and well thought out designs gave us confidence even before the project had started, the build was fast and technology utilised very fit for purpose. We have seen an increase in positive customer feedback, a decrease in preventable Incidents and an overall improvement in staff engagement since commissioning the new NOC.

I look forward to working with CRS on future expansion projects.”

Working closely with SpeedCast on the requirements and design of the new NOC layout, Critical Room Solutions had completely redesigned the original NOC, office and storage areas into an open plan environment with a 12 screen video wall, nine CRS WAVE sit/stand consoles and an internal manager’s office with a glass viewing window.

The first mission was for Critical Room Solutions to remove the infrastructure of the previous NOC, including the demolition of the old internal walls in order to convert two rooms into one larger space for the newly designed open plan NOC. The old flooring was removed and resurfaced ready for the new heavy duty carpet to be laid down as well as commercial grade vinyl being installed in the kitchen area.

The manager’s office required the building of internal gyprock walls with a glass 1.2m x 3.6m viewing window into the main room, creating an environment of both privacy and awareness. All building works, plastering and painting was managed by Critical Room Solutions.

Critical Room Solutions recommended, tested, commissioned and installed a 12 screen video wall, made up of Panasonic narrow bezel 55” high definition displays in an elegant display mounting system with an Extron Source Management and Control System and an AV rack.

CRS developed a new type of console for Speedcast, with the WAVE console being the newest model to enter the Control Room LITE range. The WAVE Console has been designed to find a balance between team collaboration and personal focused tasks for teams of engineers and technical personnel. The WAVE Console features sit/stand capabilities at the touch of a button, soft nosed edging, dual monitor mounts and a well-designed cable management system. The consoles were completed with integrated acoustic panelling for enhanced operator focus and Buro ergonomic chairs to ensure correct operating postures for long lasting comfort.

One of the most elegant features for the new NOC was the installation of a glass entry door as part of a 2.7m x 5.6m sound proofed glass wall in an aluminium frame, a truly impressive entry statement for any visitor to the NOC.

The old ceiling tiles and insulation were removed and replaced with noise cancelling ceiling tiles and new roof insulation in the NOC and kitchen.  Benches and smart storage systems for files and books were also installed in the new NOC.

The end result of SpeedCast’s NOC upgrade was a huge improvement in the use of space and technology, giving the room with a real ‘wow’ factor. Services provided by Critical Room Solutions included design consulting, project management, building works, testing and installation of all AV equipment including the video wall and WAVE consoles, and training to SpeedCast’s NOC staff.
